Finding the original 1990s demo for “Girlfriend” was like stepping into a time machine.
To give the video the right “found footage” feel, we went full analog: we dusted off the old 8mm camcorder and fired up the Panasonic Slim Line cassette player. There’s something about the mechanical click of a tape deck that digital just can’t replicate.
The highlight of this clip: Keep an ear out for the crossfade. You’ll hear the raw, lo-fi energy of the 90s tape melt right into the brand-new studio recording from the album Shards of Berlin.
The sound has evolved, but the heart of the song is exactly where Tim started it.
